Combining CSSB accounts
Combining CSSB accounts
IMPORTANT: There are time limits to combine your CSSB accounts. You must re-enter the pension plan within three years of leaving. And, you must apply to combine accounts within two years of re-joining the plan.
Your accounts are not combined automatically.
If you worked for a CSSB employer in the past and re-join the pension plan, you might be able to combine accounts.
Benefits of combining accounts:
- You increase the pensionable service in one account, which is a key factor in the pension plan formula. More years of pensionable service in one account will increase your pension at retirement.
- You reach the Rule of 80 faster, which means you can take an unreduced pension sooner.
- This may help you reach 10 years of service, which is a significant milestone in the plan.
- Your highest five years of earnings are used in the formula to calculate your pension. If you earned more in your last job, we use those higher earning years to calculate your pension and boost the amount at retirement.
Conditions
You can combine accounts if:
- You did not withdraw or transfer any of the pension in your old account
- You re-enter the pension plan within three years of leaving
- You apply within two years of re-entering
If you removed pension benefits from your old account because you were required to, you may still be eligible to combine accounts. However, you must repay any amount removed with interest.
