Death
Planning for the future means deciding what will happen to your pension when you pass away. This ensures your wishes are carried out and your loved ones are protected. Share this page with your spouse, common-law partner, or beneficiary so they know what to do.
Death after retirement
If you die after retirement, benefits payable to your spouse will depend on the pension payment option you choose when you retired.
Death before retirement
If you die before retirement, your spouse is entitled to a death benefit. Depending on the size of your pension, your spouse can take a monthly pension for life of a lump sum payment. If you don’t have a spouse, a lump sum is paid to your beneficiary or estate.
Many life changes can affect your pension. Explore the different events below to learn more. Contact CSSB if you have questions.
